...for learning more about the blogosphere!

Recently, I learned about the 'I Follow Movement' which allows comments on a blog to be followed through for the search engine spiders. I wanted to add the CommentLuv Plugin, but I don't think it is available for blogspot just yet. However, if you have a different type of blog (don't ask me what kind because I'm still trying to figure all this stuff out) it will encourage people to comment because it will automatically link back to their last post on their blog...that is very cool, indeed.

While we welcome all comments...and absolutely adore receiving them (hint, hint!), comments will remain on moderation.

Thanks again to Jennifer for being my tutor even when she didn't know that's what she was doing!! (Hmmm...I wonder what her fee is?!?!? *hehe*)

Blessings.

Ah yes, the rel="nofollow" issue! :) Originally created a several years back by google (and later adopted by everyone else in the search engine arena) to cut back on comment spam. You see, in the SEO world (search engine optimization), more-links = better-rankings.

You're talking about Wordpress aren't you? :) I've toyed with the idea of using a plugin like "dofollow", but never have. CommentLuv seems intriguing - I don't know if we would use it or not, though. It's definitely worth it to check it out!

Oh, and I doubt blogger.com (aka blogspot, owned by Google) will ever implement wordpress plugins. Sorry! :D

God Bless

Walter,

I'm clueless about all this internet stuff! I just learned today I could have my own domain or some such - and something about using wordpress as my template with CSS (I have no clue what this means) - and then something about having a host - but I don't know what that means either.

I just found that this site was the easiest for me to figure out.

I'm so confused!

No need to be confused! :) Let me give you some definitions....

domain = website address
For example "TheWilli.com", "yahoo.com", "boudinotagency.com". Domains cost money, and as such, free blog sites (like blogger.com) won't give them to you for free. Instead, they'll give you something called a sub domain, like "thereisaseason.blogspot.com", or "grandadventure2.blogspot.com". That make sense?

Hosting = Internet storage units
Ya' usually got to pay for this too (if you want good service). All your pictures, posts, videos, and other stuff has to reside in some, physical location - and that's called your host. I'm blessed with an older brother who has given me space on his server to use as a host.

Wordpress = the most popular blog software
Probably the reason why it's the most popular is because it's open source (FREE), constantly updated, and has tons of themes and add-on features. In order to use it, though, you have to already have a domain and hosting lined up - that's probably a bit more complicated than you want! :)

CSS = Cascading Style Sheets
Just trust me - CSS is good, and helps make websites look pretty.

Hope that helps some!

So, when are Mom and Dad going to get the adoption paperwork finished for me, brother?? I'm not getting any younger *smile*!

Seriously, how does one go about doing this whole domain thing and getting a host?

Camille

PS - You have been very, very helpful!!!

Most hosting companies will help you set up a domain name in a very user-friendly process. Actually, you can sometimes even get a domain free of charge if you sign up. I would recommend Bluehost. Although I've never used them, they're highly recommended by other wordpress users, and from what I've experienced have very good customer service. Plus, they're not expensive! :)

Hi Camille :). Glad you are finding the blog musings interesting and not boring! I buy domains at http://www.godaddy.com - they cost around $10/year, and we host through Hostgator, because we can have multiple domains there for one low price (though we only have one at the moment). I have an affiliate button over at my blog in the sidebar if you want to check them out!

We do use Wordpress for our blog, and I like it very much, though I don't know about CSS, and my design is pretty....simple! I need some design help actually ;). And I'm free! Woohoo! And congrats on going I follow! And happy birthday to your daughter!!

Oh wait - maybe I'm not free :), can I get a link in your blogroll in your sidebar? I would so love to be included!

Oh wait, that is ME over there in your blogroll *blush*,now I feel silly ;). Thanks! I am back to being free again ;).

Actually, hate to break it to you, but you haven't gone "dofollow" yet....

Here's something that shows you how.

KeepItSimple said...

Walter,

That's what I did before when I thought I went 'dofollow'. I took out that one line. There is another one in there about backlinks (I don't even know what they are...lol) - but it gave a grave warning about that one - so I left it alone.

Why do you think I'm not 'ifollow'? I just don't know what I did wrong.

Nice post. All very good points. There are a few sites that I've registered at in order to comment, but they are few and far between.

I've been looking for practical examples and this sounds like a very interesting read. I'll take a look at it. Thank you for the suggestions.
